This ammonite was collected near Charmouth, Dorset, on the Jurassic Coast and has been prepared using a combination of air chisel and abrasive techniques.  The matrix has also been cut to allow the rock to stand up without the need for a display stand.

Sediment trapped in the shells of ammonites can sometimes indicate which side of the animal was facing when it was fell to the seabed. This specimen has accumulated sediment within the calcite crystal on the side of the shell that is photographed, telling us that this was the side of the shell facing the seabed when it was first buried ~195 million years ago.

Diameter of Ammonite: 28mm

Age: Jurassic, Lower Lias (~195 million years old)

Dimensions of Matrix (mm): 56x78x10
